I just go to settings and choose wifi on and a list will pop up pick your router or one without a lock off the list. You will know you are connected by the bars just right of the carrier logo

make sure that button on the side top left is slid toward the screen as far as the contacts if you have manually put them in your phone im not sure what the deal is. If you expect it to read it from the sim you need to download in setting first.
