I recently had an old blackberry curve without a data plan and it worked just fine without it, but now I need a new phone and I want to get the BlackBerry Curve 8520, and I was wondering if it is necessary to have a data plan to get this phone.

Every time I turn my phone on, it says the media card needs to be formatted, so every time I go to format it, the screen freezes up and I'm forced to take out the battery. Everything that was once on my memory card is now gone, and I can't access it by plugging my phone into the computer either...
