    What are the plastic/elastic straps on women's clothing?

    Ok, this is probably a really dumb question.. it IS a dumb question. I'm a 23 year old woman and I have no idea what the plastic or elastic straps are at each shoulder on women's tops? What purpose do they serve? I was a tom boy and pretty much still a tshirt and jeans kinda girl especially...
