Looks like they're going for shambling, semi-slow, rotted zombies which is a plus in my book. Also good they're going for a bit more stylized designs, when filmmakers try to create realistic-looking people with cgi they tends to look weird.

I enjoy both, though i will admit that the toy-based cartoons do have some level of creativity in building personalities (dinobot from beast wars for example) since the characters are essentially a blank slate and its up to the writers to give them an engaging personality.

I think you're underestimating Pokemon's popularity. While of course its nowhere near as big when it was a fad during 1998/1999/2000, I seem to remember Pokemon getting good ratings throughout the shows last years on KidsWb and its doing fairly well on CN Saturday mornings for the last 2 years...
