It's cheaper to buy it unlocked and unbranded, yes. The contract-price subsidy doesn't equate the amount of extra money you pay throughout the time of that contract. Otherwise they wouldn't give you that subsidy.

That would make sense. The Last Unicorn was animated by Studio Kraft, which was a Japanese animation studio, which would explain the similarity in the animation style.
