    Why is Dante Alighieri usually referred to by his first name and not his

    last, like most authors? For example, you'll hear "Dante's Inferno", but rarely "Alighieri's Inferno." He is usually just referred to as Dante, whereas authors like William Shakespeare or Ernest Hemingway are referred to by their surname most of the time.
