    Rain Fade Discussion

As satellites age, they don't necessarily become harder to maintain in their 'box'. But what does tend to happen is they may operate the satellite in what is called an inclined orbit. Basically, this makes the box slightly larger resulting in fewer station keeping maneuvers and conserving...

Did BEV System go down @ 2:35 ET Oct. 6, 2007? (Sun Transit?)

Yes, the sun transit affects both the up and down links. Generally though, a small dish will see a smaller degradation but it will last for longer. A big dish will see a more significant degradation but a shorter period.

    Setanta Transponder Change

Or they're doing pre-work for aligning channels to transponders in advance of N4 being in service within the next 4 months or so.

Strange issue with Sat 82 connection

Essentially, your dish is pointing a couple degrees too far to the west.

MPEG4 Transition - What does it mean for BEV subscribers?

DVB-S not only includes 8-PSK, but 16 QAM as well. Just that most homeowners wouldn't want the 2.4 m or 3.6 m dish required to receive them. DVB-S2 is much more efficient so they can use the higher modulations while maintaining similar Eb/No thresholds at the receiver. Regardless of which...

MPEG4 Transition - What does it mean for BEV subscribers?

I was always of the understanding that BEV/DN was simply a standard DVB-S using the Nagra conditional access? DVB-S defines QPSK, 8PSK and 16-QAM as being compliant. The forward error-correction uses a convolutional inner code with a reed-solomon outer code. While they don't specify what the...

    Converting Bell dish to StarChoice

Sounds like a SeaTel antenna. They make nice stuff, but it's pricey.

    nimiq 2

Actually, Nimiq 4i is currently in place and I believe providing service. Nimiq 4, which if I remember correctly is currently being built by EADS Astrium and probably set for launc sometime in 07 or 08

    2 dishes?

So you want to aim to dishes at the same satellite to increase the signal strength? The only way this could be done is by phase combining the signals. It's cheaper for you to just buy a bigger dish that what you would have to pay to get a proper phase combining network.

    American networks free again??

Meh. The same could be said for virtually any consumer tech support line. they're making minimum wage and are probably are trained in an hour.

    Moving Question

I don't believe anything should happen to your contract. I called a few weeks ago to have my service moved. I haven't been under contract for a few years now and they never said anything about signing a new contract so I can't imagine that they would try and impose further extensions to an...

    HD PPV?

My opinion is an emphatic NO! I personally think that PPV SD moreso than HD is a waste of space with the exception being the special events (boxing, wrestling etc.)

BCE Sells Telesat; New BEV Nimiq 5 to be at 72.5!

Yes. The video and audio streams are encoded at either mpeg2 or 4. Typically the bit streams are then multiplexed together and then modulated (using most likely the DVB-S standard) at QPSK. One fo the newer technologies coming to the forefront is the DVB-S2 standard which provides a more...

BCE Sells Telesat; New BEV Nimiq 5 to be at 72.5!

That's a probably pretty close to the truth. They're not going to waste a limited resource proviing the absolute highest quality video when only a very small percentage of their customers would notice the difference. Ciel's estimates of 4 HD channels/tp sound like they're based on using mpeg4...

    No Satellite Signal

Not knowing what type of multi-switches you have installed, it sounds like the receiver in your bedroom is providing the DC voltage for the LNB. If you go to your multiswitch and swap the ports that the receivers are on it should work fine.

Can we hook up BEV receiver at the campsite/cottage?

Just some speculation here... coul dit be that the Anik satellites providing the Star Choice service have been granted landing rights by the FCC to provide signals in the US while the same permission has not been granted (or even applied for) for the Nimiqs?

Can we hook up BEV receiver at the campsite/cottage?

Look at that permitted space stations list (and no that doesn't pertain only to C-band) from the FCC that I posted above and open the PDF file attached to Anik F3. In paragraph 4, you'll see reference to "a balnket authorization for 1 million U.S.-licensed receive-only earth stations that would...

What is the latest on Nimiq 4?

The transition occurs somewhat like this. - Nimiq 4 is moved into position next to nimiq 2 - probably ~ 0.1 - 0.2 degrees from it - A transponder is disabled on Nimiq 2 and the equivalent one is enabled on Nimiq 4. There may be some minor repointing of the uplink antenna at this point. - By...

What will Bell do with the new Nimiq 5 satellite?

It will be later than 2012 before the 17 Ghz band is utilized. Nobody makes equipment for it right now. BEV wouldn't be interested in the Ka slot at 115 anyway. But Telesat already has a license for Ka at 82 and, if I remember correctly, N4 will have a substantial Ka payload on board (more...
