    flashing red light on an xbox 360. help?

    my friend said his xbox 360 power switch flashed a red ring and made strange sounds. When he restarted his xbox it worked fine again. He thought this was was the red ring of death, but I thought that kills your xbox. It almost sounds like a warning mechanism. can anyone help me?
