i cant figure it out

i just bought a mytouch 3G and right now, it is not sending out text messages or allowing me to call out. i have all my bars and am well within my 3G network. ON the top, though my 3g icon has an up and a down arrow. these are not lit like usual. what is wrong with it????

i have a 1999 Ford Taurus, with a V8 engine. it has 93000 miles on it. but as soon as i turn the car on, the RPMs automatically go up to 1. while i am driving, the car bounces between RPMs and sort of jerks. the oil appears to be ok. what could be wrong? the engine kinda makes a ticking sound too.
