My car won't go in drive only reverse. Do I have to replace the whole transmission or could it be something else? And if it is how can I check this?

does any one know what could be wrong with my car? It just died out. A Jump did not work , battery is good. It does not turn over it just makes a clicking noise when I try to start it. Could it be the starter or something else??? Any suggestions would be good.
