You can put any SIM into any phone. What will make it work is if the phone in question is either
a) the SIM card corresponds with the phone (e.g. AT&T SIM into another AT&T phone)
b) the phone is unlocked.

2004 - Jeff Gordon (5th Championship)
2005 - Tony Stewart (2nd Championship) (as he did)
2006 - Jimmie Johnson (1st Championship) (as he did)
