I also felt that for a film like Pan's Labyrinth the subtitles weren't a big deal. It wasn't a dialogue heavy film, with much of the focus being on the atmosphere and cinematography.

I don't think Bale has a problem with it. It is inevitable once the first film focussed on Bruce and Batman that subsequent films would move the focus onto other characters. IMO the Joker is always going to be a more interesting character than Batman adding to that Ledger gave a steller...
