Well, I know it's far from scientific but my battery did seem to drain a lot faster with the GPS left on. I guess it shouldn't though, so maybe I just imagined it. Besides, it's very little effort to turn it off whilst I'm not using it (hence why I mentioned having widgets for doing this)...
