Do climate change models make accurate backward-looking "predictions"?

As pegminer says, this is a common practice. Scientists tweak the parameters of the models and run them over past years, then compare the results with real world observations. By doing several thousand of these tweak-and-check runs, scientists can determine which specific parameters best...

In terms of climate change does it make any difference if CO2 is released

The final temperature will probably be the same, but a faster rate of emissions will lead to a faster rate of warming--and faster rate of climate change. And I'm not sure why bravozulu thinks that people are denying that CO2 gets absorbed into the ocean. I've never seen anyone deny that, but...

Who is best qualified to address "Climate change"?

It depends on what you mean by "address". Governments are the only ones who have power to make laws, so they should be the ones to create legislation that reduces emissions. Economists should be called in to assess the best way of going about that and to carry out cost/benefit analyses for the...

Air con vs windows open. What is better for the environment?

The general rule for fuel efficiency is 45 mph. Less than that, opening your windows and turning off AC will help with gas mileage. Greater than that, the drag becomes so great that you'll lose more efficiency than you would by just using your AC.

Should we make laws and create new taxes to slow climate change?

I agree!! Like do we really need laws to determine what we can and cannot do? If I want to empty my septic tank on Miami Beach and start a fire in a crowded theater, should there be some law to tell me not to? No way! That impinges on my freedoms! And do we really need ANY taxes? I mean who...

Are you willing to pay an extra 30-40% on your electric bill if it's 100%

I don't know if I'd do that, 40% if kind of steep. It shouldn't be an all or nothing thing though; ask the company if you can just pay to have like 25% or so come from renewables. That's what I do.

Do fat people really hurt the environment more than fit people?

It's not that they breathe harder, it's that overweight people tend to drive more than walk or bicycle. They also tend to eat more, which consumes more resources. If they like beef, then this contributes quite a bit to deforestation.
