Black sabbath had quite an impact too. Ozzy certainly shocked a lot of people with biting the head off the dove and the bat thing.

I did consider Damien Rice too actually, for the harmonies with Lisa Hannigan. I just wasn't sure which track to put up, so i didn't bother.

I think some people don't value it enough. Unfortunately people have forgotten what melody actually is. Anything more complex than a Monkeys song is "not melodic", this is how any band with rather complex song structures and an emphasis on soloing is "not melodic". So somewhere along the line...
