kddi uses cdma, which is different that the US CDMA freq ntt docomo phones are locked the softbank phones and vodafone japan models can work here in the US, just make sure they are unlocked

with regards to aim on verizon, not only does each im count as a text, but it takes one to sign off, one to sign on, and anywhere from one to three to get your buddy list depending on size. a quick aim chat with one person could easily be 10-15 texts, and they do not count as "in" and therefore...

V635 is good, but the screen is small in comparision to the V3, and the external screen is pretty small as well.
