If he's alive by accident, that would maybe undermine the ending a little less, but I think it would still undermine it. "The only ones who should kill are those who are prepared to be killed", and all that. The entire dramatic impact of the ending rests on the fact that Lelouch is redeeming...

I used to see tons of anime on TV without ever knowing they where anime. Some of them where, YuYu Hukasho, Inuyasha, Dragonball Z, Rurouni Kenshin, Yugioh. Elfen lied was the first anime i saw knowing it was an anime.... i think.
