They did that so that they could fit a full anamorphic widescreen picture on the DVD. The original disc only has the film in letterbox format, and the picture isn't too great.

Mr Spielberg is a bit of a what i would call a "yo-yo" director! He can make some really excellent movies (saving private ryan etc, though that movie is a bit over-rated its still good). Then he can really make some mind-bogaling crap shit like JP2, Hook etc.......i'm sure theres plenty more...
