    I would get a nice black velvet cloth as a backdrop for the jewelry. It isn't going to stand out as much against a white display as a darker display. And a macro lens, when you can get one, would be a good investment.

    You should try dpreview and camelphoto. Both have challenges. And you can post images on a forum at dpreview for constructive criticism. The challenges at camelphoto are great for getting feedback to improve technique.
