My car heats up only when I'm idling...?

I have a 2000 Chevy Caviler, and it only heats up when it idles for a while, so I'm taking it in to be fixed... I assume it might be the fan? But would anyone have any idea of how much I might be charged for this? Going to be driving it across the country... Thank you.
