Take Cingular for example.. the phones they offer FREE are crappy.. costs no more than $100 max to them. On top of it, they make you sign a 2 yr contract. They can easily offer $200-$300 discount on a 2 yr contract which will make customers/cell manufacturers happy as it would boost the number...
