It doesn't make much sense either way. You can be completely oblivious to your surroundings and not know where you are even if you lack a direction in which you're supposed to be going.

cobain obviously wasn't a virtuoso, but to me that doesn't make a great guitarist. I find most of his stuff more interesting than a lot of Hendrix, anyway. i'd still go with someone like drake or fahey first though, because their guitar work really is interesting as hell to listen to.

You should listen to folk. Elliott Smith, Nick Drake, Bob Dylan, Pete Seeger and Woody Gunthrie are my recomendations.
