Yeah, I think the lack of backstory outside of the very basics worked in Ponyo's favor. It doesn't always, but in this case, it worked and gave the film a sense of wonder it wouldn't have had otherwise. It's weird, I also had the small group of over-enthusiastic anime fans at my screening...
