Try the game options. That should help and if not you can try on the dashboard go to the headset option or audio option and i think it should be there. i know halo has it on the game options in the beginning where you get to chose from tv or headset or both.

Try looking for disassebled xbox controllers and ps2 controllers . they are just circuit boards that have buttons. i think they also have a special program in them but i could be wrong. thats the best way i can think of. Looking at disassembled ones you should get an idea of how they work.
