    Why is medicine with opiate in it so addictive?

    I take a drug called Tramadol HCL, an opiate pain killer for my arthritis, and when I try to come off of it, I feel so sick, but when I take it, I get this boost of energy and can type again and do regular chores. Why is this so addictive?
