    How did human's belief in ghosts and spirits started?

    I know the belief in ghosts has existed since the dawn of mankind but how did it started? What makes people think that ghosts exist when there is no legitimate proof other than personal-statements from "eye-witnesses"- not to mention 99.9% of "ghosts" footages are fake?
