Newly Diagnosed, new to meds, nebs, and allergies...HELP!!!

I'll just add to what everyone else has said: Yes, it can get better. It seems pretty common for adult-onset asthmatics to get worse and worse without noticing and suddenly find themselves really sick. The spring/summer I was diagnosed, I had been getting slowly sicker for nearly two years...

When to go to the doctor?

Yeah, I know. I went. They gave me cough stuff with codiene, and I feel a whole lot better after getting a whole night's sleep with minimal coughing. Said it was acute bronchitis. They also did give me antibiotics, said that it's standard treatment for acute bronchitis in people with...

havn't had bad asthma until now? or symmptoms of an allergy?

There may also be other irritants in the air in the dorm building. Through shared ventilation systems, you might be breathing tobacco residue or perfumes or incense. I don't have allergies, but I'm very sensitive to particles in the air--any kind of smoke residue, even steam and humidity...

Asthma early warning signs I never knew

Well now. Another thanks for this list. I felt a little funky this morning, and then went to the library to get some work done. Was really irked in the library because my chin was so darned itchy. Thought it must have been a bug bite or something. Then I remerabered this thread. Today...

    Help- horrible throat tightness

There's all kinRAB of things it could be. Some things that come to mind: vocal cord dysfunction (often found in people who have asthma; often confused for asthma); goiter (enlarged thyroid due to hyothyroid); allergic reaction; GERD (a common symptom of reflux is the feeling something catching...

    Ouch

I don't have long term results yet, because it's only been a couple of months, but I improved that constant achiness through exercise. My CVA was semi-controlled and I was constantly achey when I started. I use some of the weight machines at the YMCA that strengthen chest and back muscles...

    Asthma diagnosed or misdiagnosed ???

I have to disagree with JaneWhite on the allergy issue. I assumed I didn't have allergic asthma because I have no major allergy symptoms, but after having ha serious attacks at the same time of year twice, it seems pretty likely that I have allergies after all. No sneezing, runny nose, etc...

how much did your peak flow meter cost?

Yes. My symptoms are usually relatively mild but very persistent and sometimes the PFM does help me figure out if something is wrong. I don't use it every day, just when I'm having non-specific symptoms that could be asthma-related, like excessive tiredness or feeling a little tight-chested.

    Difficulty talking/walking--how serious?

Like several others on this board, wheezing is not a prominent asthma symptom for me. I also tend to cough a lot when I am symptomatic, which tenRAB to keep my bronchi clear enough to breathe. I am planning on talking to my pulmonologist at my next appointment about an asthma action plan, so I...

Best inhaler? new hfa is making me worse

I think that sometimes albuterol inhalers can cause paradoxical bronchospasm, and that that is most likely to occur with the first use of a new canister. Perhaps that was what happened and not a problem with the hfa at all? Just a thought.

    singulair

I had some pretty intense daily headaches when I first started on it, but after several weeks that went away. Personally, I started taking it because Advair alone was not keeping my asthma well controlled. I may end up staying on singulair long-term, and have the Advair titrated up and down...

When to go to the doctor?

Yeah, my pulmonologist appointment is coming up at the end of Septeraber. I'm six weeks into the three-month wait. And yeah, I know antibiotics are not merely useless, but harmful. Wish someone would get the news to my doctor. I use Advair, and I use albuterol for attacks, but it's not...

    singulair

Yeah, Advair is an inhaled corticosteroid preventer medication. It is actually a corabo med that includes the steroiRAB and also has salmeterol, a long-acting bronchodilator.

    is this normal?

You say you've been diagnosed, but you don't say how long ago. It sounRAB like this may be very recent. It takes up to two weeks for a steroid inhaler to reach its full effect; it can take longer to get your asthma under good control if you've been having trouble for a while.

Do rescue inhalers work with exercise-induced asthma?

It sounRAB to me like you might be wondering if one could, instead of pre-medicating, wait until symptoms start and then medicate. As I understand it, this is a bad idea for a couple of reasons. First, it will interrupt your workout. Second, although albuterol (or another rescue medication)...

    Side effects from albuterol?

Yes, they are. The good news is that they go away after you've been using albuterol for a while.

    Another bad attack

I can't complain really, it's been a long time. My doctor tapered me off my controller med (formerly Advair) because I was symptom free for so long, except for very occasional exercise related issues in bad weather. After my last bad attack--in late June 2008--I started running. This past...

Advair does it work for runners?

I run. I use Advair. My performance markedly increased when I increased my dosage.

When to go to the doctor?

Y'know, if I hadn't had two ER visits for asthma attacks in the past six months, I wouldn't even be thinking about going. I have a cold. Well, I've had a cold. For a week now. With a cough. That is getting worse. I cannot lie down, I'm starting to get a bit short of breathe, and the cough...
