    What is the symbolism of this chapter of the wind in the willows?

    In the chapter about the wayfarer Mole stops rat from leaving for sea, he mentions that his "eyes were those of a strangers" I know this is symbolic but I can't quite figure it out, Can anyone shed some light for me?
