I know how to polish them the basic way, but are there any tricks that work really well?

I really need to get a new phone from Verizon. I have to stay with the verizon carrier, but their phones really stink! The only nice ones you have to pay like $20 extra a month. If i were to buy a phone used from another carrier, would it activate and work with Verion. Thanks
