    do cosine of an obtuse angle only happen in quadrants?

    in the quadrants cosine of an obtuse angle is -x/y . However , in real life if i were to calculate any given hypotenuse , the length cannot be negative . Thus , does it only happen in the quadrants and i can only use the cosine of an acute angle in real life?
