I'd take a sample of your water to a local pet store, they'll run a check (usually for free) for all chemical imbalances.

I live in Tasmania and ther's heav restrictions on what you can bring in, so no African Dwarf Frogs, freshwater mussels, borneo loaches, crays, shrimp, turtles etc.
