Which one is the better av receiver? Denon or Yamaha?
Denon 2310 is a higher level if you compare it to Yamaha 665. Denon 1910 is the same level. I recommend Denon but both are good receivers. -

Your sound system or HD DVR may unsupport audio via HDMI connection, so you need to connect optical cable from HD DVR to Yamaha system for audio.
