I too hate the film. I dislike the characters, all of which seem played by the wrong type of actors. As Sly so excellently points out, the film isn't so much 'dark' as it is 'overly bleak' - or perhaps, 'bleak for bleak's sake'. Weak, grasping narrative and lacks any kind of compelling element...
