The general rule of thumb is 1/4" movement up and down when the chain is cool. It is a simple adjustment and needs to be checked once a month. I'd suggest that you become responsible and do it as the alternatives are not pretty.
I believe that Ford truck 4x4s have four wheel anti-lock sensors, one on each wheel. If you disengage the 4x4, does the symptom go away? One of your sensors may be malfunctioning.
