Great question. The Nikon, Canon, etc are DSLR. They have a mirror in them that is used to see through the lens. The Leica is not DSLR (digital single lens reflex) and therefore the physics of the lenses affords the Leica, the ability to use smaller lenses. The Leica is built on a "rangefinder"...
