It's not pack behavior, it's pride behavior. Ever watch nature documentaries on how lions hunt together? They walk together until they spot prey, then split up to position themselves for the cooperative hunt.
I think there are more people who know how to cook now than in the past, because there are a lot more people than their used to be in the past. I'm not sure if the proportion of people who know how to cook in relations to those who do not know how has changed, though.
