Check engine light came on mechanic did a diagnostic.The result was 2 codes for oxygen sensors.What is the purpose of the sensors & how important is to replace them asap? I have 190,000 miles on vehicle & mechanic wants to charge me about $300 to install them is that accurate.

When I open my hood it wont stay up & comes down very quickly.How can I fix this problem & what piece do I need to replace? it's just becoming a real pain.Thanks in advance
