As in the title, were there any defining points in the modern art period? Points that changed the way modern art was perceived and if so, what and when were those points?

Sounds weird but what I mean is, do I have to have an appointment first and have them recommend it? I only ask because I have a broken tooth in the back of my mouth, its been broken for a while but caused me no problems for a while but recently its flared up and is causing me no end of pain...
