Are HTC phones just for sprint?

No. All carriers carry HTC phones, but they do not carry the same phones. So, if you find a phone that you like and it is on a carrier that you don't have then you are out of luck. Your best bet is to look at the website for the company you currently have. Otherwise, plan on switching companies.

starting a no contract line with sprint?

I have found that that is very true. However, in my department, we are able to put you on a 1 year contract versus the 2. Even though you are signing a contract, you are always eligible to get a free or discounted phone as if you have always been a Sprint customer and were out of contract...

    unlocked phone for t-mobile?

Unlocked means that it will allow any carrier who uses sim card technology to use that phone. So for instance, if you were with ATT instead of T-Mobile and you wanted that unlocked T-Mobile phone, since it is unlocked, you can use your ATT sim card in it even though its not an ATT phone.

    If I buy a g1 off ebay, and I have a t-mobile sim-card already, do I still have to

You do have to purchase a data plan for the G1. It will not work if you do not. The first stage of getting a G1 active, is making a google email account to open it up, and you cannot do that without the internet. With that said, you have to have a monthly plan as this phone will not work on...

how does the t-mobile plan work?

Its $79.99 per month for talk, text and web. You pay your bill up front each month (which means your first bill will likely be 2 months). If you do not pay your bill on time, they will shut it off until you make the payment.

If I unlock my tmobile blackberry will it erase the contacts in the phone?

No. Unlocking the sim card only unlocks it so that you can use your att sim card. Nothing on the phone will be changed or erased.
