Which do you think is a cooler hobby? or cooler in general?

I really want a road bike, but I'm too much of an outdoors guy. I figured a hard-tail could make a good hybrid between the two. Something I can cruise to work in the summer (ocean lifeguard), take on a beat up trail, and bike 40+ miles around the city. What model/makes can you recommend for me?

I want a trail where I can just go live, care-free, mountains, wind, sky and just enjoy being alive. I live in San Diego, I have a wide knowledge of hunting and survival and I just want to go out some where and hike 100-200 or even 300 miles. Where can I do this at?
