This delay is always concluded by a slight noise from one of my external USB Hard drives indicating it has become active (spinning up), then the photo or video clip opens. Why does my computer wait for the external drive to become active before opening a photo located locally on my desktop...

In addition to all of my digital pictures, I have been scanning in hundreds more of my paper photos from my film camera days. So far I have my pics grouped in folders by subject or location. For the pictures of multiple people, I have them in a "misc" folder and all pix are numbered. I guess...
