my bata fish is swimming on its side after i saw him on his side i changed the water after that for about 10 mins he was on his side but the he was back up right. whats wrong with him?

I got a zoo med submersible water falter that has small black sticks in it and i think some may have fallen out of the falter and i think he was eating one if he did is he okay?
