i read that sometimes when you use the u540 dll you can't use the phone anymore that you can't call or send messages and you have to do it through the u900 dll after that but i have not been able to find a workable u900 dll yet. If somebody can confirm that the u540 dll works good I will try it...

it's likely a hardware issue. verizon does not have bad quality (or any other carrier has specifically a low quality version of a phone), it just happens sometimes. you should be able to waranty through MOTO (well you can try) just flash back to the original firmware first.
