It's a double-edged sword, but that kind of logic is exactly what will forever lock the two-party system in place. Think about how many people that justify voting only either Democrat/Republican with that kind of reasoning, and if they all voted for somebody like Nader, he wouldn't necessarily...

Hmm, I thought action cartoons were a big thing right now. And can we really be sure that it's "do-gooders" who are to blame, and not people involved in the actual creation of cartoons?

It won't. ;) I always thought that too. They were a unique play on the animated sitcom couple that took a 180 that some cartoons do when they become driven by a formula.

I find myself agreeing with the whole "safe and formulaic" explanation. I myself had a feeling that the film would be the usual formula. Whether or not that factor led me to not seeing it is still unclear to me. But is there a possibility that Tron Legacy might break that problem?
