When cyclists attach the 'bike computer' gadget to see the speed, distance, time, etc, how does the determining speed part work?

...for each purposes? I noticed that long races and time trial races have different kinds of cycling bikes... do i REALLY need them for specific purposes? i mean, im definitly not a pro or anything but i dont wanna look like a dumbass when i go to a competition
