When you want to ripen a banana quicker why is an apple needed when you put it in a paper bag? I need this for a project I'm doing so please answer. Thank you! :)

I'm doing a science project by putting some bananas and an apple in a paper bag and recording the results each day. I also have to write a report about why this happens. But i can't find any websites that tell me why, so could anyone help?? Thank you! :)
