It depends on what you mean by engine problems if you have to replace the engine you are not really going to save that much. I would pass on both too many miles.
Its a car as long as its not pink you should be fine. I own a 02 focus sedan with over a 150k on it and its been a good car so people need to realize they are not junk as with any car its only as good as you take care of it. Just be sure to get one that hasn't been abused.
