Very astute of you. Since the phone is branded to T-Mobile, it appears that the phone doesn't have the voice mail applet that is present in other E-Series phones.
So... you won't bea ble tochange it.
If you want to try modifying the phone, you don't even have to wait for the n97. Use a 5800 or n85 and see if they can double its ram. Same result would apply to the n97.
I'm not sure if it was alrady told (and a thread search returned nothing) but you can try N97 in Nokia Remote Device if you reserve and have patience, and they even have the latest firmware installed.

Saw this the other day, and the only positive thing I can saw is tat this appears to have a removable battery, which may end up being a thing of the past with Nokia.
