    Why do I cough when I get water in my wind pipe?

    The trachea is wet and is lined with mucus - right? So when I accidentally put some saliva in there, or when I accidentally get water in there, why does that invoke coughing?! I mean, there's already water in there... what's so bad about another drop of water?
