Mine did. It was a loose battery connection. Rather than exchange it, I just put a piece of business card under it to force a tight connection. That was months ago and no problem since.

I imagine portrait will mostly be for phone and a quick SMS but that most texts and browsing will be in landscape. One of my iPhone friends hates browsing landscape because his muscle memory is on the portrait mode and he gets wacked out using the altered dimensions on the landscape keyboard.
